Breaking Cycles and Teaching Love

Scrolling through social media today, I came across a powerful post that stopped me in my tracks.

A mom shared how her eight-year-old daughter asked, “What does LGBTQ mean?” Before she could respond, her own mother interjected with, “She doesn’t need to know about that.”

Instead of shying away, the mom leaned in with grace and honesty. She explained:
  • “L is for lesbian, which is romantic love between two women.
  • G is for gay, which is romantic love between two men.
  • B is for bisexual, when someone has romantic love for both men and women.
  • Q is for questioning or queer, when someone knows they aren’t heterosexual.
  • T is for transgender, when someone transitions to live as their true self and be true to their heart.
It’s all about love—how people find love in the world and how they love themselves for who they are.”

Her daughter listened thoughtfully and responded, “I understand, that’s really beautiful.”

This moment resonated deeply with me because it highlights the importance of breaking unhealthy cycles within families. Too often, older generations frame LGBTQ topics as something inappropriate or solely about sex, when in reality, these conversations are about love, identity, and understanding.

By choosing to educate her daughter with compassion, this mom not only empowered her child with knowledge but also started to unlearn harmful stigmas passed down to her. That takes courage.

We can’t underestimate how powerful it is to teach our children love, acceptance, and the beauty of diversity. Every time we do, we’re building a better, more inclusive world. Let’s keep breaking these cycles together.

Love is Love no matter how you look at it.
