Breaking Cycles and Teaching Love

Scrolling through social media today, I came across a powerful post that stopped me in my tracks.

A mom shared how her eight-year-old daughter asked, “What does LGBTQ mean?” Before she could respond, her own mother interjected with, “She doesn’t need to know about that.”

Instead of shying away, the mom leaned in with grace and honesty. She explained:
  • “L is for lesbian, which is romantic love between two women.
  • G is for gay, which is romantic love between two men.
  • B is for bisexual, when someone has romantic love for both men and women.
  • Q is for questioning or queer, when someone knows they aren’t heterosexual.
  • T is for transgender, when someone transitions to live as their true self and be true to their heart.
It’s all about love—how people find love in the world and how they love themselves for who they are.”

Her daughter listened thoughtfully and responded, “I understand, that’s really beautiful.”

This moment resonated deeply with me because it highlights the importance of breaking unhealthy cycles within families. Too often, older generations frame LGBTQ topics as something inappropriate or solely about sex, when in reality, these conversations are about love, identity, and understanding.

By choosing to educate her daughter with compassion, this mom not only empowered her child with knowledge but also started to unlearn harmful stigmas passed down to her. That takes courage.

We can’t underestimate how powerful it is to teach our children love, acceptance, and the beauty of diversity. Every time we do, we’re building a better, more inclusive world. Let’s keep breaking these cycles together.

Love is Love no matter how you look at it.

"Whispers of Winter: The Magic of the First Snowfall

It was late this afternoon when the first snowfall of the season arrived. The crisp air carried a new sharpness, and the sky wore a soft blanket of grey. Tiny snowflakes swirled and danced to the ground, some dissolving as they touched the grass, while others clung to rooftops and the cars, leaving a light dusting.

I stood at the window, my coffee in hand, smiling at the sight. “It’s so peaceful,” I thought. But secretly hoping that it doesn’t stay on the ground. I’m not ready for winter to settle in yet.

I stood there for a while staring out the window and just reflecting, knowing that 2024 would soon end and wondering what 2025 is going to bring me.

A Final Goodbye to a Dear Friend

In loving memory of a friendship that spanned almost three decades, we remember and celebrate the life of a remarkable woman, born on June 28, 1968, who left us on October 27, 2024, after bravely fighting stomach cancer for a year and a half. She was more than a friend; she was a sister, a confidante, and a kindred spirit whose impact will live on in all of us.

We met 29 years ago, and from that moment, our lives became intertwined with laughter, adventures, and shared memories that now feel like chapters of a beloved book. We traveled the winding roads of Manitoulin Island, where we laughed under the stars and breathed in the wild beauty of the landscape. Camping trips and cottage weekends filled our summers with simple joys—campfires, laughter echoing in the trees, and long, meaningful conversations that lasted deep into the night.

Our adventures together weren’t just in rustic settings; they also took us to sandy shores far from home. For my 50th birthday, we celebrated in Cozumel, soaking up the sun and creating memories that I now hold especially dear. She had a way of lighting up every moment with her joy, humor, and warmth.

Her legacy lives on in her two children, Melissa and Brian, and her beloved granddaughter Aria. She was immensely proud of them all, and her love for them was unwavering. Aria, her precious granddaughter, will grow up hearing stories about her vibrant grandmother and knowing that her spirit lives on in every laugh, every memory, and every shared story.

To those of us who knew her, she was a force of nature—unstoppable, loving, and courageous. Even in her final battle with cancer, her strength was unshakable. She faced it with grace and determination, teaching us all the power of resilience and the importance of cherishing each day.

Though she is no longer here, her spirit remains. We carry her with us in every cherished memory and every story we share. She leaves behind an indelible mark on all our lives, a reminder of the beauty of friendship, the joy of shared experiences, and the love that endures beyond time.

RIP Nelly.
